Artist Statement:
The concept for my two paintings was fashion icons painted in the style of religious icons. I knew I wanted to involve fashion into my final piece for art class because it is such a huge part of my life. Because I am pursuing a career in fashion design, I felt it was important to incorporate it into my pieces, and somehow it became the main focus. Warhol’s work is very influential to what I made because he takes household names, like Campbell’s Soup, and paints them. I took household names like Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld, and painted them. Many of Terry Richardson’s photographs are featured in very famous fashion campaigns, such as Tom Ford and Yves Saint Laurent, which relates to what I created because I took fashion icons as the inspiration for my paintings. Frida Kahlo’s work was influential to what I painted because I like how her self-portraits are realistic but not too realistic which is the approach I took to my paintings as well. Some elements of art I used in my painting were complimentary colors with the golden yellow halos complimenting the purplish red background. I tried to make sure I kept the clothing simple and monotone that way there wouldn't be anything too flashy about the picture to distract from the people themselves. Some things I struggled with, and that could have been improved in my pieces, were that I could have added more details in the faces to make them seem more lifelike and realistic. I wanted them to look as much like the real Anna Wintour and Karl Lagerfeld and I feel that I really captured their personalities and personal style through these paintings. If you don't know who either of these people are, well, to quote Anna Wintour, “you either know fashion, or you don’t."
